La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin: Debussy arr. František Pok.Grade 6-7

Score and parts................................£7.50
Le Piccadilly: Satie arr, Sylvia FairleyGrade 5-6
'Le Piccadilly is in ragtime style, but needs to be played in a more swaggering fashion than the later piano rags of Scott Joplin. This arrangement works well for the intended instruments, and should be readily accessible to players of around grade 6 standard'
PAN magazine 2006
Score and parts................................£7.50
Dance from the Bartered Bride: Smetana arr. František Pok.Grade 7-8+

Nutcracker Suite: Tchaikovsky arr. František Pok.Grade 7-8+
František Pok has chosen to arrange six excerpts from the ballet: the sparkling Overture, the Danse des Mirlitons, the Trepak which is a traditional Ukrainian dance, the Danse Arabe, smoothly dark in texture with an hypnotic rhythm and melody, and the Danse Chinois, comical in its bass figurations and notable for avoiding the cliché of pentatonic melody. The finale is the Valse des Fleurs, one of Tchaikovsky's finest waltzes.
Score and parts................................£12.50
Swing into Christmas & Don't Lose Your Rag! arr. Sylvia Fairley

Chaconne: Handel arr. Janet Myatt.Grade 6
This has been arranged from a keyboard original in the Halle Handel Urtext. Although the rhythms are very reminiscent of a Chaconne, the work does not follow a regular harmonic scheme: the chaconne structure is alluded to through the intermittent use of a four note descending pattern and a recurring, decisive cadence.
Score & parts................................£10.00
DOUBLE WIND QUINTET
Clog Dance from La Fille Mal Gardée: Herold/Lanchbery arr. Sylvia Fairley. Grade 5-7+
The famous Clog Dance, performed in the ballet by Widow Simone, danced in true pantomime style by a man. The humour of the piece comes from the alternation of melodic passages with the rhythm rapped out by the dancer's clogs on the floor. In this arrangement the 2nd horn takes centre stage by doubling on wood block..

WIND ENSEMBLE
Black Stick Rag for 5 clarinets in Bb by Tony Radford.Grade 3-6
Having discovered ragtime as a teenager I have always loved the style and composed a number of 'pastiche' ragtime pieces throughout my life…..this piece was written to satisfy the needs of an ensemble which contained beginners to players of grade 6 – 7 standard. T.R.
Score and 5 parts................................£9.00
Paula: a Bossa Nova for clarinet quartet & piano or rhythm section by Tony Radford.Grade 5-6
The 'lead' role is shared more or less equally between the four clarinets. . However, the 1st clarinet part is the most technically demanding and uses the highest tessitura of the four parts. The piece should ideally have a rhythm section of piano, or guitar and bass without piano. T.R.
Score and 4 clarinet parts + piano................................£11.50
Orpheus in the Underworld: Selection: Offenbach arr. Sylvia Fairley for 2 flutes & 2 clarinets in Bb.Grade 4-5
'…..here, Sylvia Fairley has selected several of the most famous tunes and arranged them neatly for 2 flutes and 2 clarinets. Every part has its share of melodic interest, and I am sure four players of grade 4 or 5 standard would enjoy playing this selection very much' PAN magazine 2005.
Score and 4 parts................................£10.00
Three from the Magic Flute: Mozart arr. Sylvia Fairley.Grade 5-6
'I am pleased that Sylvia Fairley has made this arrangement of Mozart arias from one of the most mystical yet accessible of all operas........ for a very effective combination of instruments, to add to far too small a repertoire. I hope to see further arrangements of this kind from Sylvia Fairley'. PAN magazine 2005.
Score and 4 parts................................£10.00
SAXOPHONE QUARTET
Two Traditional Spirituals: arr. Tony RadfordGrade 4-5
Steal Away & Joshua. Although the spirituals of the Afro-American slaves appear on one level to be simple, religious songs, they were also used to pass on encoded messages and plans for escape. When we know that 'Jesus' was the name of one of the ferry-boats on the escape route, the words of Steal Away to Jesus take on another meaning.....
Score and parts: soprano, alto, tenor and bass................................£10.50
SOLO INSTRUMENTS
Two Character Sketches: Introvert & Extrovert for oboe and piano by Paul Fenoulhet.Grade 5-6
Introvert is based on a circular oboe melody over piquant piano chords: the central, nervously playful section shares its material between the instruments. Extrovert opens with a jolly, almost martial theme: the piano part features ebullient chords based on 4ths and 5ths. A contrasting, more lyrical melody is floated over sumptuous arpeggios for the piano, before returning to the mood of the opening section.
Oboe & piano................................£7.50
'Mosaics' for Bb clarinet and piano by Sylvia Fairley.Grade 6-7
Mosaics is built on a mixture of chromatic and gypsy scales and sequences. This very effective piece contrasts a reflective, improvisatory opening with a nimble allegro and a more melodic legato section. The improvisatory music returns at the end to complete the piece.
Clarinet & piano................................£5.00

Overture to Iolanthe: Sullivan arr. Sylvia Fairley for 4 flutes in C + optional alto & bass.Grade 5-7
Much of Sullivan's "fairy music" pays hommage to Mendelssohn's incidental music for A Midsummer's Night's Dream. The delicate timbre of the Iolanthe overture lends itself admirably to the sound of flutes. Here, everyone has something interesting to play, in this attractive arrangement.
Full score & 6 flute parts................................£11.00 Extra Parts 60p each
Mikado Melodies: Sullivan arr. Sylvia Fairley for 4 flutes in C with optional alto & bassGrade 5-6
'This piece is arranged for four flutes as a stand-alone quartet, but the optional alto & bass parts do give a fuller and more interesting sound. Sylvia Fairley has chosen five melodies for this nicely presented and well written arrangement which lasts approximately 5 minutes…….it does require players of equal standard as, gratifyingly, each player gets a slice of the tune.' PAN magazine 2004.
Full score & 6 flute parts................................£11.00 Extra Parts 60p each
Ave Verum Corpus: Mozart arr. Robin Soldan for 5 flutes in C, alto & bass.(with easier 4th flute part)Grade 4-7 (4th fl. 3)

Songs and Dances from Dido & Aeneas: Purcell arr. Sylvia Fairley for 3 flutes in C (+ picc ad lib), alto & bass.Grade 5-7
Based on a story from Virgil's Aeneid, this is Purcell's only true opera, and contains some of the most beautiful melodies. It was commissioned by Josiah Priest, a dancing master, so it comes as no surprise that the opera includes so many dances, two of which are to be found in this selection.

4. Triumphing Dance. 5. Sailor's Song 6. Sailors' Dance.

OTHER FLUTE ENSEMBLES
Transverse Blues by Tony Radford for flute trio with rhythm section or piano.Grade 5-6
'......This piece was written for three flute players of equal standard to play for a GCSE ensemble performance with bass and rhythm guitar, but it can equally be played with keyboard. It is an attractive jazz piece, starting with a sixteen bar section with all three flutes playing the same rhythm. The middle section involves all three players having a solo line, with accompanying interjections from the other two, while in the last part they come together again.' PAN magazine 2006.

Dance a Cachucha: Sullivan arr. Sylvia Fairley for 4 flutes in C Grade 4-6
'Wine when it flows in abundance, enhances/The reckless delight of the wildest of dances…' The Cachucha, from Gilbert & Sullivan's Gondoliers, is sung and danced with great gusto when Giannetta and Tessa are reunited in Spain with their 'gallant gondolieri', Marco and Guisseppe. The music is within the grasp of players of about grade 4 standard, but to play it with the necessary panache, a standard of grade 5-6 would be needed.

Minuetto from L'Arlésienne Suite no: 1: Bizet arr. Sylvia Fairley

Full score & parts................................£9.50 Extra Parts 60p each
Flutes Play Fledermaus: Offenbach arr. Sylvia Fairley for 4 flutes in C
with piano.Grade 4-6
'....the opening finds all four flutes in rhythmic unison. Following this, some interesting writing between the parts can be heard, when all four flutes are given equally important roles. Dynamics, tempo changes, articulation and so on are all clearly marked. There are a number of melodies in this fun work, which can be played quite easily by players of grade 4-5, although there are a number of key changes to keep everyone on their toes!.... I look forward to more arrangements from Sylvia Fairley.'
PAN 2004

Tarantelle: Saint-Saëns arr. Sylvia Fairley for 4 flutes in C, alto flute & piano.Grade 6-8
Originally written for flute, clarinet and orchestra, Saint-Saën's Tarantelle
transcribes very effectively for flutes with piano. This arrangement uses the two outer sections, omitting the middle part which is less suited to this ensemble, thereby making the piece more compact at a playing time of about 4 minutes .The tarantella, Italian in origin, is a fast, energetic dance and needs players who can play it with confidence at a lively speed.
'Highly recommended' MUSIC TEACHER 2004.
Flute score, 5 flute parts + piano................................£12.00
Mikado Melodies: Sullivan arr. Sylvia Fairley for 4 flutes in C (alto & bass optional) – see Flute Choirs.

Score & 4 flute parts................................£8.50 Extra Parts 40p each
Bossamanda by Tony Radford for four flutes with rhythm section or piano.Grade 5-6
The 'lead' role passes freely between all four parts, but the difficulty level increases from part 4 to part 1. The ideal accompaniment would consist of piano or keyboard alone, or with double bass or bass guitar and rhythm guitar added. Drums could be used ad lib (though no drum part is written), alternatively, a rhythmic accompaniment could be provided by claves and cabaza.
Full Score & 4 flute parts + keyboard................................£11.50
Anitra's Dance & Solveig's Song from Peer Gynt: Grieg arr. Sylvia Fairley for flute trio with piano.Grade 5-6
Anitra is a Bedouin princess who mesmerises Peer with her dancing and runs off with all his possessions; her music is Arabian in mood, and you can hear the little bells and tambourines in the ornamental runs for the flutes. Solveig is the faithful girl who waits for him during his wanderings. You can sense her noble character in the contours of her melody-line and in the deep-toned harmonies.
'.....each flute in turn has phrases from the beautiful melody, while the harmony is provided by the other two and the piano. Both arrangements work very well indeed….' PAN magazine 2007.
